With three of the Top 10 Scoring Contestants overall – Prescott’s Jacob Cobain, Ryan O’Connor and Nick Moore – Embry-Riddle was the most represented school for individual scores in the top 10. They also won all team-based honors including the coveted Judges Championship Trophy, Flight Events Championship Trophy and the Ground Events Championship Trophy. In addition to being the first competing team to win three times in a row, Prescott’s Golden Eagles finished with 544 points, the highest not only in the team’s history but most points earned by any team since the establishment of the competition’s modern scoring system. The team also has an unbroken 34-year record as regional champion. With the 2018 top title, Prescott’s Golden Eagles have now won the NIFA SAFECON national championship 12 times since 1993. It featured more than 350 students from nearly 30 of the nation’s top colleges with aviation programs including the United States Air Force Academy, University of North Dakota, Purdue University, Florida Institute of Technology, Southern Illinois University, Auburn University, Kent State University, The Ohio State University, Western Michigan University and others. The event, held April 30 – May 5 this year at Indiana State University, brings together collegiate aviation teams from around the United States to compete in flight and ground events such as navigation, computer accuracy, preflight inspection and more. In a history-making show of aviation skills, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Ariz., Campus’ Golden Eagles Flight Team captured its third straight and 12th national championship title this past week at the 2018 National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) competition in Indiana. The finish included a fifth place finish in the “Flight Events” category and ninth in the “Ground Events” category. The NIFA SAFECON is held annually, pitting the top collegiate aviation programs in the country against each other in a series of compeitions testing their skills in the air and on the ground. The eighth-place finish by the Flying Mavs puts them in a class above institutions like Oklahoma State University, Auburn University, Purdue University and the United States Air Force Academy. The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Flying Mavericks earned the highest team finish in program history this weekend as they placed eighth at the 2018 National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) SAFECON competition, which took place Monday, April 30, through Saturday, May 5, at Indiana State Univeristy.
